Answer
How Do I Know When a Prophet Is Really Speaking for God?
You may wonder, “Prophets are imperfect, so how do I know when they are really speaking for God?” Maybe you believe in living prophets but still feel unsure about how their humanity and their calling fit together. That’s a good question. Let’s look at the pattern the Lord has given us.
The central truth is that prophets do not need to be flawless for Jesus Christ to authorize and guide them. In Doctrine and Covenants 68, the Lord was instructing early missionaries who had been called to preach. He taught that what His servants speak “when moved upon by the Holy Ghost” is scripture and the will of the Lord. Their authority comes from Christ, and their prophetic teaching comes by revelation.
Elder Robert D. Hales explained another part of that pattern: prophets receive revelation to direct the Church, while you are responsible to seek personal revelation for your own life. The Holy Ghost can therefore help you receive and understand prophetic teaching; personal revelation is not meant to replace the prophet’s responsibility to receive revelation for the Church.
It can be easy to take the true statement “prophets are imperfect” and quietly turn it into the assumption that imperfect people cannot reliably serve God. Scripture does not support that conclusion. Peter needed correction, Moses had weaknesses, and Moroni openly acknowledged his limitations. The adversary can use an unrealistic expectation of perfection to make ordinary human weakness feel like evidence that God is absent.
Research on religious disagreement offers a useful practical insight. In a study of 174 people discussing difficult religious issues, greater mutual intellectual humility was associated with more trust and closeness afterward. Humility means being willing to learn without assuming you already see the whole picture.
Consider: Am I expecting prophets to meet a standard God has never required? Have I asked the Holy Ghost to help me understand this teaching? Am I studying the prophet’s actual message or mainly reactions to it?
This week, read Doctrine and Covenants 68:1–6, study one recent prophetic message you have questions about, and write down what becomes clearer as you pray. Jesus Christ can teach you how to recognize His voice while seeing His servants as the mortal disciples they are.
